About Denise
I was born in Honolulu Hawaii as Denise Yvonne Dowse (theatrically known at Norfolk State as Yvonne DuShay) the daughter of US Naval Officer Captain & Mrs. Herbert B. Dowse, both of whom are now unfortunately deceased. With a BA in English/Theatre, and an understanding of Physical Education (Thanks Coach Archie!), a plane ticket in hand and a diploma carrying Cum Laude graduate of Norfolk State University, I left the United States to travel to Bremerhaven, Germany to visit my parents who were stationed there at the time. My plan was to hang out and travel for a few months and then head off to New York to tackle Broadway - HA!! It was 7 1/2 years before I would return to the States and of all places, move to Los Angeles, California, where I've been for the past 20 plus years
If you do any television watching or channel surfing you may have caught me as Vice-Principal Mrs. Teasley on the long-running hit Beverly Hills 90210. I've guest-starred on shows such as Criminal Minds, Bones, Charmed, The Mentalist, The Guardian, ER, Any Day Now, Party of Five and the list has been blessed to continue!
Some of my feature film work includes The Call with Halle Berry, Ray, Coach Carter and a co-star in Biodome. But always coming back "home" to the boards, I've done theatre around LA and have been seen doing; Three Times a Lady, for colored girls, Mysteries in a Silver Box, Club Termina, Long Time Since Yesterday, The Jackie Robinson Story, South of Where We Live, Hamlet (with the Los Angeles Women's Shakespeare Company), Othello and Life and Death: the Vaudeville Show which traveled to Cuba. I started directing in LA in 1995 with Long Time Since Yesterday by P.J Gibson (nominated for 6 NAACP Image Awards), and I won the 1995 NAACP Image Award as Best Director and Dramalogue Award for Best Director then I followed that by directing an original piece "The Chest" by Angela deJospeh for which I received 1996 NAACP Image Award as Best Director (nominated for 10 NAACP Image Awards). I also volunteer as a director for the Dangerfield Institute's annual Celebrity Roast to raise money for orphans and foster children at Christmas. I have directed Debbi Morgan's One Woman Show along with Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Bonita Brisker & Vanessa Williams shows – also One person shows. For the past 17 years I've spent my weekends at "Amazing Grace Conservatory - a Performing Arts Institute" for inner city youth ages 8-18 as their Resident Director, and an acting and speech. I directed their first full stage production, The Wiz done in the spring of 1997 with 75 - count em - chilluns and they ALL had at least one line, it was MAGIC!!!!! I do have a few more gray hairs because of it but it was well worth the hair dye. :) The production received 6 NAACP Image Award Nominations. I gotta tell ya - working with these children have changed my life and saved it. I've watched what a little bit of theatre and a whole lot of love and positive reinforcement can do for a child. We've had kids leave their gangs, kids go back and get their GED's, and have watched shy little flowers blossom – so, no matter how tired, depressed or whatever might be wrong with my day, after leaving my rehearsals and classes with them, my day is righted. I'm still single and live in a cute little house in South Los Angeles with my 3 love muffins – Buster (Lab Ridgeback), Shadow (Staffordshire Pit) and Gabby (pit bull). I do still enjoy the travel and this summer did the most!! Perhaps 80 o/o was work but you know me, I will always find time for a bit of fun! Denise Dowse was born on February 21, 1958 in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA. She is an actress and director, known for Requiem for a Dream (2000), Pleasantville (1998) andStarship Troopers (1997).
About Jamelle
Jamelle (grandson of John Dolphin), authored the book "Recorded In Hollywood: The John Dolphin Story," published in 2011. The book is based on research in historical records, as well as, hundreds of hours of verbal interviews with family and friends -- and records the true life story of John Dolphin, who was owner of the world famous record store "Dolphins of Hollywood" which began around 1948. Jamelle was inspired to write the book, as a natural outgrowth of hearing the many colorful stories about his grandfather. As Jamelle grew up in Los Angeles, having the last name "Dolphin" always seemed to be followed by "are you related to John Dolphin?" Jamelle Dolphin holds a B.A. degree in Business Administration Marketing from Sonoma State University, and he currently runs Dolphins of Hollywood Productions with siblings Ahman Dolphin and Glory Dolphin Hammes, in Los Angeles, CA.
